Melissa Vaughn Brighton, Michigan Title: Wood Fired Vase Year of Creation: 2005 Glazes: Shino and flashing slip with wood ash Clay Body: Porcelain Dimensions: Height 11 inches, Width 5 inches Artist's Statement: This piece is hand built porcelain with the use of slip-casting for the main body (from a custom made plaster mold) and a slab rolled neck/spout that had been impressed with a patterned stamp. The spout/neck portion of the vase was glazed with shino (dipping method) and the body portion was dipped in a flashing slip; wood ash was sifted over the upper portion of the vase. The vase was fired to cone 10 in a wood kiln with the addition of salt for vapor effects.
