David Fry Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom Title: Thrown and Shaped and Incised Vase Year of Creation: 2011 Glaze: Copper red overlaid with wood ash and brushed iron oxide Clay Body: White stoneware Dimensions: Height 8 inches, Width 5 inches Artist's Statement: David Fry has been making studio pottery for over 35 years. The aim of his work is to produce beautiful objects that can be used for display or the table. His method of working and the nature of the kiln firing makes every piece a unique work. His inspiration comes from the glazes and ideas and simple forms of the early ceramics from Japan, China and Korea, plus a love of English Mediaeval pottery. He has spent many years studying and working out recipes for the ancient oriental glazes to which he added his own intuition to increase their depth and beauty, achieving layers of colour within colour. |
