Stephanie James-Manttan Beulah Park, South Australia, Australia Title: Impressed Vessel Year of Creation: 2009 Glaze: Clear interior glaze only Clay Body: Porcelain Dimensions: Height 13 inches, Width 9.1 inches Artist's Statement: My work is drawn from Australian indigenous basket weaving which I was exposed to while doing a ceramic workshop in Outback Australia in 2008. This vessel and its organic nature is a response to the indentation I make on it which changes the hard visual exterior of the ceramics to a soft woven like characteristic. The surface patterns are inspired both by the repetition of the weave and by another indigenous artist Gloria Petyarre and her curve-lined rhythmic bush medicine paintings. |
