Bertice McPherson Mobile, Alabama, USA Title: Vase with Shell Impressions Year of Creation: 2009 Glaze: Stoneware saturated iron, cone 6 Clay Body: White stoneware Dimensions: Height 13.5 inches, Width 8 inches Artist's Statement: I became enamored with clay while an art student at the University of South Alabama in 1979 and have been working in clay ever since. I do wheel work, but prefer handbuilding. This vase is slab built with coils for rim and foot. I live on the Gulf Coast and used a large shell I picked up while at the beach to impress the ridged texture on the piece. I was pleased with the way the glaze broke over the ridges. I received my M.F.A. from the University of Alabama and maintained a home studio where I teach and work. |
