Catherine Tamou Eltham, Taranaki, New Zealand Title: Thrown & Altered Woodfired Year of Creation: 2009 Glaze: Shino type glaze using local materials Clay Body: Local Clay Dimensions: Height 12.99 inches, Width 9.06 inches Artist's Statement: In my practice I create individual, high-fired ceramic tableware and large thrown and altered sculptural pieces. I am constantly refining my forms and combining different clays and glaze materials. It can be the desired or unanticipated results that then inform the directions my work will take. As well as being purposeful, I required that my work be beautiful and tactile with a strong sense of visual balance. My deconstructed reconstructed pieces are a dichotomy of convex (concave) and flat segments. Layering of engobes and slips begin on the form from its raw state. The rhythmic throwing lines, joins, surface treatments and firing all signify the pots journey to completion. |
