Palul Paul Rideout Redding, California, USA Title: Gaia's Eyes Year of Creation: 2012 Glaze: Underglazes and glazes, raku fired and reduced in cedar shavings Clay Body: B-Mix 5 with grog Dimensions: Height 15 inches, Width 7 inches Artist's Statement: Once again I am drawn to the universal. The eye has a power beyond what it sees. It is a mandala and a wheel. Gaia, Mother Earth, is the all-seeing eye of nature, a powerful symbol. In my forty plus years in clay, my work has gone through multiple transformations, from utilitarian to non-functional. Ultimately I know that good art blends the idea with technique. For me, to create great and lasting art, the idea must come first and have a universal quality--beyond time, locations and cultures. All the years of learning technique gives one the ability to manifest the idea into the world of clay.
