Nic Collins Moretonhampstead, Devon, United Kingdom Title: Woodfired Jar Year of Creation: 2010 Glaze: Natural ash Clay Body: Stoneware Dimensions: Height 30 inches, Width 18 inches Artist's Statement: My work is made using a mixture of local clays. The pots are mostly thrown, using a momentum kick wheel. The main influence of my work is from English medieval pots and Japanese wood fire work. I started making my living as a potter after leaving Derby College of higher education in 1987. My first pottery was at Powdermills on Dartmoor in Devon. My current home and workshop is at Moretonhampstead, a small Dartmoor town, where I have been since 2000. I am fascinated by the process of long wood firings. I can manipulate the fire over the period of four days, to give me effects that I am looking for, utilizing the live flame and wood ash to give the rich results I am searching for. |
