Johanna DeMaine Landsborough, Queensland, Australia Title: It is more than a picture to hang on the wall Year of Creation: 2009 Glaze: Celadon Clay Body: Southern Ice Porcelain Dimensions: Height 5.91 inches, Width 6.3 inches Artist's Statement: This piece is from the body of work entitled "Exploring the Sublime." The word sublime conjures up many responses, with the beauty/sublime dichotomy being the more prevalent. Whereas beauty generates a feeling of peace and harmony, the sublime challenges the senses, imagination and understanding. My exploration references the Kantian view that nature created the human mind and thereby provided us with intuition whereby we can appreciate both beauty and the sublime. In my work, I explore the notion that the sublime is an extension of beauty. The work explores my inner and outer space through the use of preciousness. I attempt to achieve this through the use of higher levels of skill, precious materials and contemporary technology whilst actively pushing all to their limits. |
