Nan Rothwell Faber, Virginia, USA Title: Oval Salt Glazed Vase Year of Creation: 2008 Glaze: Salt glazed with celadon interior and sprayed salt slips to exterior Clay Body: Phoenix by Highwater Clay Dimensions: Height 8.5 inches, Width 7.25 inches Artist's Statement: I've been firing salt glaze since 1973, and over the years, I continue to learn to exploit the directional quality that salt provides. This piece is a good example of the variation that sprayed slips can provide, with one side a matte orange color and the other ranging from shiny brown to blue. Although one can simulate that variation with stoneware glazes, salt firing is the quickest, most direct way to achieve it. My favorite pots are ones that look quite different front to back. |
