Peter W. Knickerbocker Penn Yan, New York, USA Title: untitled Year of Creation: 2009 Glaze: Copper red and blue ash Clay Body: Stoneware Dimensions: Height 12.5 inches, Width 6 inches Artist's Statement: I have worked as a functional potter for over 30 years amid the controversy of craft as art, working with colors and design to define my position on this issue. I worked toward and earned a Master's of Fine Art in Painting - clay became my canvas, and the glazes and the fire are my paint. Each piece I make is marked by the elements of the firing, affected by the patterns of air flow, the melding of different colors, the completion of the rituals of firing. Each piece is made to a scale that anyone who loves color and the tactile quality of clay can enjoy. I believe it is art on a personal scale. And after all these years, it is still full of wonder and excitement. |
