Jonathan Kaplan Denver, Colorado, USA Title: Looking in Vase with Avian Attributes Year of Creation: 2008 Glaze: Cone 6 strontium frit glaze with stain Clay Body: Cone 6 white ware body Dimensions: Height 35 inches, Width 14 inches Artist's Statement: This vase is from a recent body of large scale ceramic work. The vase is thrown in sections, assembled and re-thrown. The birds are slipcast. My intent is to change the interpretation of what a vase is by altering its scale as well as what we think of that may be a "handle". These new vases share a cultural reference to Sung Dynasty vase forms but that is perhaps the only ceramic reference. The change of scale as well as use of a monochromatic glaze provide this work with a definite sense of presence. |
