John C. Karrasch Sparks, Nevada, USA Title: Altered Vase Year of Creation: 2005 Glaze: Cone 10 reduction glazes Clay Body: Stoneware Dimensions: Height 4.75 inches, Width 3.75 inches Artist's Statement: I am resolved that one can only re-state that which has evolved in nature. I am presumptuous enough to enjoy combining materials formed in nature over millions of years and re-state the intrinsic color and texture of these materials in a silicate form, as he can be accomplished after a few hours in the potter's kiln. While I employ many of the traditional ceramic glazes in the studio production, I can enjoy the spontaneity and magic of an unpredictable interaction of earth and fire demonstrated in human presence. You will be welcome to find the disciplines of earthenware, stoneware and porcelain in the studio. The work may be the solution of utilitarian function for the table, floor or wall or at best an intuitive statement of natural materials. |
