Peggy Forman and Jan Schachter Portola Valley, California Title: Sophie Year of Creation: 2003 Glaze: On bisqued porcelain: black slip, rutile wash, Japanese ochre, cobalt chloride and underglaze pencil Clay Body: Porcelain Dimensions: Height 7.25 inches, Width 3.5 inches Artist's Statement: For almost 20 years Peggy Forman and Jan Schachter have been collaborating. Jan throws the pots: plates, vases or bowls out of porcelain and bisques them. Peg takes them home and draws whatever the form inspires. Many of the drawings have evolved from series of life drawings she has done using a live model. Her drawing techniques come from a long time love of watercolor painting started in college. However drawing and painting on clay is an exceptional challenge where what you draw is not necessarily what you get. Jan's vessels have evolved significantly over time from tight exacting vessels to ones that are loosely thrown. It is great fun for both of us to see what will come next.
