Sam Scott Shoreline, Washington Title: Black and White Vase with Handles Year of Creation: 2006 Glaze: Aztec black matte Clay Body: Kai porcelain Dimensions: Height 10 inches, Width 7.5 inches Artist's Statement: Potters have always used the vessel as a metaphor for the human figure, utilizing figural terminology to describe its component parts. In this vase, I have articulated these parts: the foot, belly, shoulder, neck and lip. I also gave the handles a bone like appearance to further emphasize this human connection. The biomorphic black glazed areas contrast with the white porcelain surface to create a sense of movement or swelling. Through the integration of all these elements, I hope to create a form of strength and elegance.
