Marcus O'Mahony Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland Title: Wood-fired Vase Year of Creation: 2009 Glaze: None Clay Body: Grogged stoneware Dimensions: Height 9.84 inches, Width 7.09 inches Artist's Statement: I make functional stoneware and porcelain rooted in the Leach Hamada tradition. The potter's wheel is the starting point for my work. I use soft and heavily grogged clay to encourage a loose fluid character in the pots. I often alter the work on and off the wheel and I use thick slips to further develop the surface and encourage a sense of movement. I have been firing with wood for the past decade and the work has evolved through much experimentation to take advantage of this dramatic and engaging process. My aim is to produce work that is expressive, creative, has contemporary overtones and a natural appeal. |
