Fran Johnson Nagy Birmingham, Alabama, USA Title: Pure Hapa Year of Creation: 2013 Glaze: Unglazed Clay Body: Stoneware Dimensions: Height 16 inches, Width 5 inches Artist's Statement: With roots in Hawaii, and Alabama, Fran grew up in the cultural melting pot of New Orleans. The face jugs of the Southern potters have inspired her to create half-faced pots with Asian features. This work is significant of her own embracement to the once derogatory Hawaiian social classification of the half- Japanese; a Hapa. Fran's work has received honor in the International Ceramic Festival '11 Mino Japan. |
