Russell Coburn Boulder, Colorado, USA Title: Wood-fired Vase Year of Creation: 2013 Glaze: Hikidashi and wood ash, wood fired with electric refire Clay Body: Stoneware Dimensions: Height 13 inches, Width 8.25 inches Artist's Statement: I have been a potter since 1970. My work may convey to you something of the historic spirit of pottery. Within that, my goal is to make pots of distinction and beauty that will evoke feelings of continuity to those traditions, but also bring a contemporary expression to it. i generally like to work in series, though I return to certain forms that continue to evolve. I find extra meaning in the pot-making process by procuring many of my materials from nature; hand-dug clays, porcelain and stoneware are all used in the body of my work. For glazes, I use historic, classic recipes and also formulate many of my own using wood ash, dug clays and local black granite. I fire in both electric and wood burning kilns. |
