Johanna DeMaine Landsborough, Queensland, Australia Title: Transmigration Year of Creation: 2011 Glaze: Cobalt limestone glaze, gold, sand etched and raised enamel Clay Body: Southern Ice Porcelain Dimensions: Height 10.24 inches, Width 9.84 inches Artist's Statement: Transmigration: 1. To move or pass from one place to another; 2. To migrate from one country to another in order to settle there; 3. (of the soul) To be reborn after death in another body. In this work, made at the time of my elderly mother's extended stay in hospital, I explore my mother's journey to her adopted country and her journey through life there. At the same time, I am recording my journey into a new way of working using the dot to achieve atmospheric perspective, line and textural colour within my narrative and to invite a deeper conversation and emotional connection to the story that the marks on the surface convey. |
