Joyce Diveley Onalaska, Wisconsin, USA Title: Freya, Goddess of Love & Magic Year of Creation: 2011 Glaze: Underfired white Clay Body: Cone 5 white stoneware Dimensions: Height 16 inches, Width 4 inches Artist's Statement: In the hand building of this simple cylinder, there became a delicate balance between solid and open spaces. I found a wonderment in the delicate nature of her face in contrast to the maze of cut out areas, filled with a maze of "hair". The glaze was a wonderful surprise as it fired to a very soft pewter color and gold accents bring another metallic element and added dimension to the magic of the vessel. The tall cylinder is simple enough so as not to distract from Freya herself, by raising up in a fluted lip to elevate the entire piece and add to that feeling of something magical happening here. |
