Margaret Sumich Forrest Hill, Auckland, New Zealand Title: Treacle Vase Year of Creation: 2011 Glaze: Tessha, slips, wood fired salt and soda Clay Body: White clay Dimensions: Height 6.69 inches, Width 4.72 inches Artist's Statement: I am a vessel maker: whether thrown and altered or handbuilt using slab, or pinch-and-coil, each form is based on a vessel. This piece, of course, is thrown and altered using stamps and incised decoration. I mostly like to achieve the freedom of the flame on the pot rather than the rigidity of applied brush decoration, hence my chosen methods of firing using mainly wood as fuel. I am currently firing "domestic" pieces to 1300 Centigrade in a wood kiln at Auckland Studio Potters and using a mix of salt and soda to give the effects I wish. |
